Things You Really Mustn’t Miss In The Theatre And Circus Fields!
Organiser’s Personal Top Ten:
1. Midnight’s Carnival with Carnesky’s Ghost Train, the Pretty Freaky Sideshow, Pyrette Ship Stage, Gin Palace and Invisible Circus Stage venues – this new area is really very exciting, and with its decadent, late 19th century “feel” will provide a wealth of exciting performances and experiences between dusk and dawn each night of the Festival, and from 8pm-2am on Thursday.
2. “Triada”, presented by the wonderful Russian company blackSkywhite really shouldn’t be missed. This show is of the highest quality, and you will be entranced and amazed by what you see – you really will not believe your eyes!
3. Join Jonathan Kay Of Attic Theatre for an adventure where absolutely anything might happen – meet him each afternoon in La Belle Epoque and just “go with the flow”, as they say. This really is the stuff of Festival memories and Festival folklore!
4. Incandescence have a marvellous new performance in the Circus Big Top each night, full of superb skills and astonishing aerial work.
5. The Stephen Frost Impro All-Stars will be performing in La Belle Epoque on Friday and Saturday evenings. Not only are Richard Vranch, Suki Webster, Andy Smart, Phil Jupitus, Stephen Frost and the deadpan Paul Merton incredibly funny, but they are also incredibly quick-witted, and you will be amazed by the quick-fire responses of this superb Impro team.
6. Dream Engine, whose Heliosphere (a huge inflated white shining helium balloon with an extraordinarily highly skilled trapeze artist below who interacted with the crowds) enchanted us all a couple of years ago, return with their stunning new show “Cone Dancers” in the Circus Field each night.
7. The Malcolm Hardee Tributes will take place in the Cabaret Marquee. Malcolm was a stalwart of the Cabaret Marquee since its very first inception – not only did he perform there each year, but he introduced a wealth of new talent to the Festival – he truly was the godfather of stand-up comedy! The Glastonbury Festival and Radio 4 Tribute will be led by Arthur Smith and other great stand-up talent, and recorded between 6pm and 7pm on Friday for transmission on Radio 4 next month – and the Cabaret Marquee’s own Tribute, led again by Arthur Smith, and including many of Malcolm’s highly talented friends, will take place on Saturday evening – there are bound to be some very funny stories (for, after all, Malcolm did indeed steal Freddie Mercury’s birthday cake, and do a whole load of other very naughty and funny things during his sadly short life), a lot of very rude jokes, a few balloons and a great deal of nudity – be there, or you will miss something very special!
8. Twisted Cabaret in La Belle Epoque performed by Americans, Paul Nathan, an incredible magician, and Frank Olivier, juggler extraordinaire, promises to be a stunning piece of very exciting and amusing entertainment. These 2 are exceptional performers, and you should catch one of their shows if you can.
9. Bright FX will be staging their marvellous fire and pyrotechnic show “Ignite!” to the left of the Dance/Fire Stage at 10.30pm each night – a corker of a show!
10. Street (or Grass) Theatre – You won’t have a chance to miss this, as it will be all around you, staring you in the face. From girl guides to gargoyles, from horses to seagulls, from huge stilt characters to shrubberies and shamanic shoe shiners, from druids to council workmen and wandering magicians, the best of Britain’s street theatre is gathered here to amuse you – we hope it makes you happy!
